| The Zone Benefit Show Feb 25, 1998 Granada Theatre in Lawrence,Ks. review by Dan Ellis Grovel: Heres a band I've seen a hundred times (almost literally) and they still never cease to amaze me. They got up on stage with probably a grand total of 20 people in the rather large Granada theater, and played with as much emotion as I've ever seen any band play with. They played their noisy, emotional rock with such intensity it was hard to imagine not enjoying them. To add to the beautiful music they had an amazing computer animated graphics show projected on the screen behind them to only add to the dreaminess of their beautiful set. The Blackwater: Despite the fact that I've actually been in a venue the night that The Blackwater was playing at least once, I never actually got the pleasure of seeing them until this show. They were absolutely wonderful. Dreamy, and spacey, yet somehow dark, and emotional. There really isn't a whole lot you can say about a band like that, other than it was unbelievable that they can do what they did. Exit 159: I have one word to describe their set: Refreshing. It was so neat to hear a band playing real rock n' roll. I think they all reminded of us of what people like The Beatles, and The Who did for music. They were intense, they had fun, and they weren't overblown. It was also refreshing to hear a female voice that didn't babyish, or like she wanted to kill everyone watching. On top of all the great rock n' roll they had fun, and so did the people watching. The Pete Townsend ending was really the icing on the cake for the night. Wrapup: It was a beautiful night of great music, and a lot of fun. Despite the fact that there wasn't an amazing amount of people there (and not to mention that I didn't win the door prize) there was three amazingly talented bands that played, and played well. I believe anyone who was there will admit it was one of the better local shows in the KC/Lawrence area. |
