PARENT’S OF MURDERED CHILDREN BENEFIT: The Neil Young Hoot Night
The Grand Emporium
July 15, 1999

Review by Danny Alexander

Apparently, most of the bands that gave the impression they would play this benefit for the Parent's of Murdered Children were confused about their commitments, but the ones who showed made for a wonder-filled evening. The highlight for me was a performance led by Wichita's Ulu that included the Brannock Device and Cher UK. Together, these terrific bands turned in an incredible "Rocking in the Free World," which delivered the edge of Neil Young's lyrics with conviction and then kept the song going with a deep, dark jam involving four guitars, heaping doses of feedback, inspired keyboard and endless choruses of the song, sung by as many as half a dozen singers, that turned the vibe of the lyric from urgent to joyous. Lots of love to Mike McCoy for pulling this beautiful thing together and raising over $400 dollars for the cause.
