Pavlov’s Cats - "Cobra says Yessssss"

Album review by Chris Meck

There’s an awful lot of music being made these days that isn’t bad, per se, but isn’t remarkably good either. This Lawrence quartet has some good ideas; unfortunately none are quite good enough to carry an entire song. Bogged down in repetitive arrangements and typical sonic choices, the disc feels doomed to “averageness” from the start.

Singer Jeff Prater has a decent voice, but seems timid and non-committal on each tune of the six-song EP with the exception of “Fall on You”, a waltzy ballad that is by far the best song included here. The rest of the disc is comprised of pedestrian power-pop fare; low on the power, slight on the melodies, heavy on the pedestrian. At one point in the last song,” Gettin’ Plowed”, Prater finally wakes up, and belts the refrain, but it’s far too little, too late.

There seems to be a timidness that plays out across the board here, and coupled with bland arrangements and unconvincing lyrical content, it makes for little interest. It’s not bad, but it’s not really good either. Cobra says Yessssss, but I say no.
