the fall and rise? of the nineties
how would you define the nineties? before we start shouting obscenities, let's look back for a moment. the sixties spawned a time for experimentation and gave birth to musical geniuses that ranged from the possessed guitar work of jimi hendrix, to the psychedelic mind fuck of pink floyd. the early seventies took that experimentation further with artists like david bowie, t-rex, can, the doors and for my taste, joy division and the velvet underground. the seventies carried on and brought the induction of a time that would never die but could never be repeated, the punk scene. from england to the east coast, from SOcal to D.C. bands like the sex pistols, x-ray specs, the damned and tom verlaine brought the energy of angst and debauchery to an all new level. later this combined with the rhythm of disco would evolve groups like blondie and transfer into the eighties. the eighties saw the shockwave of "new wave" and made plastic into something to be worshipped. it gave england an open door to come in and show america just how snide and boring it was becoming and introduced "the underground".
it was already hard in the past to find "original" music with the exception of a handful. that was why we were so "devoted" to them, you had to scrape, dig, and beg to find your favorite bands latest album, then after you got it, you listened to it until it broke. but that was then and this is now. the music industry is too busy making their fast buck on an even faster band and not thinking about the bands who lives and music strive for one thing "longevity". that's why if you go to a record store, any joy division or bauhaus record will always cost you $25.00 to buy, why? because they were devoted to themselves and it showed in their music, it's dateless, followed no trends. it doesn't matter if you like it or not, you couldn't deny that it was and is original. luckily there has been an explosion of bands whose beauty can't be ignored. radiohead and spiritualized are good examples. all in all, my bitch is that now is the hardest time for those bands that are audibly showing you their souls instead of showing someone else's soul. things change......................................... |
