Music and Revolution Weekend / June 26-27, 1999/ Kansas City, Missouri

The Music & Revolution weekend is sponsored by the National Cultural Committee of the League of Revolutionaries for a New America (LRNA). LRNA is a national organization of revolutionaries whose sole purpose is education. LRNA uses all possible means (newspapers, schools, forums, house meetings, radio, TV, music, Internet, etc.) to explain to the American people that the abundance that modern technology makes possible can create a peaceful, prosperous society for everyone on earth.

The specific purpose of the Music & Revolution weekend is to bring together a core of musicians, music journalists, and music fans from around the country to plan for the massive distribution of the third edition of Music & Revolution, a special insert for LRNA's national newspaper, People's Tribune/Tribuno del Pueblo.

The weekend will start with a two-part school so that we can all get a common general estimate of the situation we face. The first part of the school will explain why capitalism is breaking down, as computer and robotic technology create an abundance that cannot be distributed under a profit-driven system of private property. This first section of the school will also show how the new tools being used by society are creating a new class of people, tens of millions strong and growing bigger every day, who have effectively been pushed outside the economy.

This revolutionary element in society has no stake in the current system and, as a result, they are wide-open to new ideas about how to reorganize society. But they must be reached with these ideas. This is where music comes in. Without music and everything music is connected to in our culture, we can never reach the masses of people. We can never have a revolution. We have no chance of survival.

So the second part of the LRNA school will be on music and its relation to revolution. It will trace the development of the music industry as it has evolved with the capitalist system and show how that music industry has become obsolete and absolutely incapable and cannot provide a living for artists and can't distribute anything but an incredibly tiny fraction of the music that is created every day in America.

This situation is disgusting but, on the other hand, it gives us confidence that countless musicians and fans are ready to hear what we have to say. They are ready to be linked to the millions of people pushed outside the economy and, together, a force can be created with the capability to transform society and eliminate the poverty and violence that now define our lives. They are ready to talk about music and revolution. As at all LRNA schools, there will be plenty of time for discussion, questions, comments, etc. We learn together.
