The Zippo Moment was formed in the early months of 1998 and began racking up a string of local club dates almost immediately thereafter. The band's unique name was taken from an article written by Ann Powers of the New York Times in which she coined the term “The Zippo Moment” to describe how music fans used to fire up their lighters in anticipation of a favorite song.

The band intuitively identified with the article. It served as a focus for the passion they still felt for rock music - even at times when the general public seemed to have zero tolerance.

The Zippo Moment released their self-titled debut on Siren Lure Records in late summer of 1998 and have since received airplay on numerous local radio stations, including: 105.9 FM (The Lazer), 90.7 FM (The Hawk), 98.9 FM (The Rock), and 90.1 FM.

The Zippo Moment was nominated as Best New Band at the 1999 Klammy Awards sponsored by the PitchWeekly, a newspaper circulated throughout the Kansas City area.
