Resident Clark

"Now that's the kind of thing I'd like to hear on the radio!"

The members of Resident Clark are hearing a lot of that these days. And even though their unique style of "roots-pop" music has yet to find its way onto commercial airwaves, that's not really what matters to these guys.

What does matter is that their music is connecting with audiences in their home base of Kansas City and, more recently, throughout the Midwest. It's that rare music that is instantly appealing due to its upbeat feel and memorable melodies, and yet rewrards repeat listeners with complex arrangements and thoughtful lyrics.

The heart of Resident Clark is Ted Horrell (lead vocals/guitar) and Jeff McGinness (drums/vocals) who played as two-thirds of the popular bar band Pintos n' Cheese while attending the University of Missouri-Columbia. Audiences grew to expect that band's eclectic mix of covers which veered from John Hiatt to L.L. Cool J to the Velvet Underground to Howlin' Wolf. When Horrell and McGinness decided to put a "real band" together in Kansas City, they brought these influences to the table with the philosophy that the song should always come first.

The addition of Jeff's brother Joel McGinness (keyboards/vocals) added a fresh new dimension to the band's sound and helped further define Resident Clark's roots-pop- vision. In the summer of 1999 the band (under the name The Ringers) beat out over ninety other entries in the KY 99.7 Battle of the Bands for the opportunity to perform at Kansas City's Sandstone Amphitheater. In early fall of that year, Resident Clark released its first studio CD, Horseshoes and Handgrenades (review).

The newest member of Resident Clark, Cody Wyoming (bass/vocals) has contributed to the band's already strong stage show and has helped the group build its reputation as one of the most consistent performing groups in the Kansas City area.
