Meet the raving lunatics responsible for the Zone

Staff
Danielle Nelsen
Creator, Editor, and Designer
danielle@thezone.org

Realizing the need to expose and promote the local music scene, Danielle created the Zone in the hopes that a professionally designed and meticulously organized website might attract attention and encourage people to get out to more local shows. She has since become one of the scene's most vocal supporters and has a huge passion for peanut butter m&m's. Danielle is the proud mommy of Kellan Christopher Nelsen!

Danny Alexander
Staff Writer and Columnist
danny@thezone.org
Danny has been a music writer in the Kansas City area since 1988. He began at the Pennylane Pitch before writing with the Note, the View, the New View, the Pitch (Again), the New Times, and, most recently, Pitchweekly. He has also been writing for Rock & Rap Confidential since 1986, and out of anti-censorship work connected with that newsletter, he started a newsletter with other local writers in 1988, called "A Sign of the Times". In 1989, he co-founded the Greater Kansas City - Coalition Against Censorship and stayed very involved through the first two Culture Under Fires. He also contributed to the books "50 Ways That You Can Fight Censorship" (Thunder's Mouth Press, 1991); "Culture Wars" (Greenhaven Press, 1994); "The New Book of Rock Lists" (Fireside, 1994); and wrote "Liner Notes: Soul Asylum" (Boulevard, 1996). And just when you think Danny couldn't do anymore, he also teaches English at Johnson County Community College and is a magnificant poet.

Mark Cuthbertson
Staff Writer
mark@thezone.org
A fan of The Zone ever since one of his first-ever internet searches nearly two years ago, Mark is taking an extended vacation from his career as a middle school English teacher to write, perform, advocate, and review live music in Kansas City. Is currently accepting donations for his recently depleted Les Paul and Future Home Studio For A Friendly Musician Fund.

Chris Wagner
Staff Writer
chris@thezone.org
Chris Wagner has played or moonlighted in various local bands, in various local clubs, since 1990. Because of, or perhaps in spite of these experiences, he now thinks he is qualified to document "the scene"; this in spite of the fact that his only relevant experience comes from high school journalism class, where he learned the fine art of skipping journalism class. Feel free to correct him on this point at your leisure. Turn-ons include: good coffee (that's coffee, not fucking latté), college basketball, and being the only guy up front at the show. Turn-offs: encores (two extra songs' worth of time wasted), Purple Hooters (a shot; try one and see why), and the use of the phrase "soooo not…". To paraphrase: If you can't do, review.

Dana Detrick-Clark
Staff Writer and Columnist
dana@seriousvanity.com

When Dana isn't putting together compilations for her label Serious Vanity (Serious Vanity), recording with her band Post Orgasmic Trauma, or writing for the Zone and the Women of Mp3.com, she likes to have delusions of grandeur.

Chris Meck
Staff Writer and Columnist
chrismeck@thezone.org

Chris Meck has played in numerous area bands for nearly a decade and currently plays lead guitar for Kristie Stremel.

Ray Mallory
Columnist
raymond@thezone.org

Ray writes for an underground newspaper and is working on a magazine called Cluster Funk. As far as music goes, he likes old punk rock (mainly 1977 british "pop"), americiano punk, and most other music with strong political and social ties.

Bryan Fries
Columnist
bryan@thezone.org

Originally from Cleveland, but long a resident of Kansas City, Bryan is a finance geek by day and a myriad of other incarnations by night. These include guitarist, wakeboarder, mountain biker, motor biker, bad cook, barroom philosopher, and, as we see here at the Zone, a writer. Overly ambitious, no; just trying desperately to find something he's good at.
